If your early bug still has a single circuit master cylinder, you might want to consider upgrading to the later specification dual circuit set-up.
All modern vehicles (and all VWs from 1968 onward) are fitted with a Dual Circuit master cylinder and reservoir, for increased safety. The idea is a simple one, the front brake and the rear brakes hydraulics are split into two totally seperate circuits (controlled by two seperate chambers in the master cylinder), so that if you ever have a brake component failure like a wheel cylinder / brake hose / caliper, the other half of the vehicles brakes will still continue to function .... allowing you to safely bring the vehicle to a halt. With single circuit brakes, if one component fails in the circuit ... you've got no brakes!
We have been supplying the components to perform this important upgrade for many years, but we thought it was time to bundle them together, and incorporate a money saving for you at the same time.
In our view, this is an essential safety (and performance) upgrade for pre 1967 single circuit Bugs and Beetles
Replaces the old single circuit set-up
Better braking performance
This bundle kit is suitable for Right Hand Drive models only
Essential upgrade for conversion to disc brakes
The new dual circuit reservoir is positioned in a stainless steel bracket, next to the bonnet hinge as per later vehicles
Although you can retain your original hard brake pipes, we would recommend changing them at the same time (use a 1968 onward kit).
Contains a German master Cylinder, German CSP stainless reservoir bracket, OEM reservoir, and three metres of the correct specification blue hose and clips … all top quality components.
Q. How do I tell whether I have got single circuit or dual circuit brakes?
A. Simply take a look at your brake fluid reservoir, if it has one pipe feed from the bottom of the reservoir going to the master cylinder, its single circuit. Dual circuit always has two pipes.
